ON THE RUN
JOE: This spring has turned into a bit of a New Balance rotation for me, and it almost feels like each model plays a different role in the same story. The 1080v15 is your smooth cruiser, the Ellipse v1, for me, is still trying to find its footing, and the Fresh Foam X 860v15 settles in as the steady, reliable presence that quietly delivers.
Out on the run, the biggest surprise was how the shoe balances firmness with a bit of bounce. It leans firmer than most New Balance options I have tried, but it never feels dull or lifeless. There is just enough energy underfoot to keep things moving, especially when you pick up the pace slightly. The support stands out in a similar way. It is noticeable in a good sense, but never intrusive. Think of it as supportive rather than overbearing, more Vivian Banks than Marie Barone, keeping things in line without overdoing it.
What stuck with me most is how versatile it felt in real life. It handled shorter daily runs just as easily as it handled long stretches of time on my feet. Whether I was heading out for a few miles or spending hours walking around, the 860v15 felt consistent and dependable. It is the kind of shoe that makes running feel simple.

THE FIT
JOE: The fit was one of the more immediate wins for me, especially coming off the Ellipse which felt a bit tight through the forefoot. Here, everything felt more natural. My foot sat comfortably in the shoe without any hotspots or pressure points, and it felt true to size right out of the box.
There were a few moments during colder days when I switched to thicker socks and noticed a slight bit of crowding in the toe box, but it was minimal and never turned into a real issue. In normal conditions, the fit felt dialed in. The engineered mesh upper does a nice job of holding the foot securely while still allowing enough airflow to keep things comfortable over longer efforts.
The platform itself plays a big role in the overall fit and feel. The wider base and slightly higher sidewalls give the shoe a planted, stable sensation without making it feel bulky. The move to a 6mm drop was a great adjustment as it creates a more balanced ride. That slight adjustment helps prevent some of the forward pressure that can show up in higher drop stability shoes.

THE FEEL
JOE: Before trying the New Balance Fresh Foam X 860v15, I was not entirely sure what to expect from the ride – I hadn’t truly run in an 860 aside from trying it on for a few minutes when a new shipment would arrive at our store. What I found was a shoe that leans firm but still manages to feel responsive enough to keep things interesting. The dual layer Fresh Foam X midsole isn’t soft in the traditional sense, but offers a controlled kind of cushioning that works well for steady efforts.
There is enough pop to make tempo efforts feel comfortable, even if this is not a shoe I would choose for anything faster than that. The firmness actually works in its favor here, giving it a more responsive edge than many other stability shoes that tend to feel overly soft or muted.
The Stability Plane is where things really come together. Instead of relying on a rigid medial post, the support feels more integrated across the entire platform. It is less about forcing your foot into a specific position and more about gently guiding it as you move. The sensation is subtle, almost like the ground is slightly angled to support your stride rather than block it. That approach makes the shoe feel more natural and opens it up to a wider range of runners and walkers.
The outsole and rocker geometry round things out nicely. The grip held steady through wet, snowy, & icy Michigan spring conditions, and the rocker helped keep transitions smooth without requiring extra effort. It all adds up to a ride that feels consistent from start to finish.

THE NITTY GRITTY
JOE: The 860v15 fits best as a daily trainer for someone who wants a bit of added support without sacrificing comfort. It feels right at home on easy runs, recovery days, and general day to day use. It also transitions well into walking, which adds to its overall versatility.
Where it starts to show its limits is on longer runs or when you are trying to pick up the pace. As the miles add up, you begin to notice the weight a bit more, especially past the hour mark. It is not overly heavy, but it is not trying to compete with lighter performance trainers either. That tradeoff feels intentional given its focus on stability and durability.
In terms of comparisons, it sits somewhere alongside models like the Hoka Arahi 8 and the ASICS Gel Kayano 32. Compared to the Arahi, the 860v15 feels slightly softer and more enjoyable to run in, while still offering a similar level of support. Next to the Kayano, it comes across as firmer and a bit more responsive. Compared to older versions of the 860 and past stability models like the Vongo, this feels like a more refined and balanced approach that broadens its appeal.

THE RUNDOWN
JOE: The 860v15 ended up being one of those shoes that quietly wins you over the more you use it. It may not stand out at first glance, but it proves its value run after run. It is comfortable, supportive, and versatile enough to handle a wide range of situations without needing much thought.
New Balance says it’s “the most stable running partner. Crafted to deliver the best combination of everyday stability and comfort for the everyday runner. Also perfect for those looking for all-day comfort and stability for walking.” And I have to agree.
The 860v15 has earned a spot in my regular rotation for both running and walking, which says a lot about how easy it is to rely on. While it might not be the first choice for long runs or faster workouts, it fills an important role as a dependable daily option.
At its core, this is a shoe that prioritizes consistency. It shows up, does its job well, and keeps you moving forward without distraction. Sometimes that is exactly what you need.
