ON THE RUN
Joe: The Altra Torin and I have had a complicated relationship over the years. I fell in love with the line right as the Torin 4.5 was disappearing from shelves, struggled through the tongue designs of the 5 and 6, enjoyed the 7 before it eventually lost some life after a couple hundred miles, and then never really connected with the Torin 8, though admittedly the heavier GTX version probably didn’t do it any favors.
So, heading into the Torin 9, I was hopeful but cautious.
It didn’t take long for this shoe to win me over.
Within the first couple of runs, I noticed something that’s usually a very good sign for a daily trainer: I wanted to keep running in it! During one workout, I finished an impromptu 10K tempo effort and still had about 25 minutes before a staff meeting. Instead of heading in to get changed, I immediately tacked on another 10-minute cooldown simply because I wasn’t ready to take the shoes off yet.
Even more noticeable was how my body responded after a couple weeks of predominantly running in the Torin 9. I had been dealing with some lingering hip and knee discomfort beforehand, and somewhere along the way, that pain quietly disappeared. Obviously, no shoe is a miracle cure, but there’s something to be said for a shoe that encourages smooth, natural movement mile after mile.
At 9.8 oz (278 g) in a men’s size 9 with a 28mm zero-drop platform, the Torin 9 hits a really balanced middle ground. It doesn’t feel stripped-down minimal, but it also avoids the oversized, overly disconnected feel that some max-cushion daily trainers can create.

THE FIT
Joe: The fit is one of the biggest improvements in the Torin 9. Altra refined several areas of the upper, and the updates immediately stand out once the shoe is on foot. The redesigned heel collar feels much cleaner and more secure than previous versions, helping the shoe feel dialed in without becoming restrictive.
The breathable mesh upper keeps the step-in feel soft and comfortable, while the elevated tongue design thankfully avoids some of the frustrations I had with earlier Torin models. Everything feels streamlined and intentional this time around.
Of course, the hallmark Altra fit is still here. There’s plenty of room through the forefoot for natural toe splay, and the zero-drop geometry continues to give the shoe that grounded, natural-running feel longtime Altra fans appreciate.
One detail I especially appreciated was the inclusion of the Vibram outsole on the standard model. I’ve always disliked when premium outsole upgrades get reserved for expensive “plus” versions of shoes (ahem, Altra Lone Peak 9), so it’s great seeing Altra include "the grippiest Torin outsole yet" right out of the gate. Whether running on roads, sidewalks, or less-than-ideal pavement conditions, traction has felt consistently reliable.

THE FEEL
Joe: Though the fit upgrades were noticeably better, without a doubt, the biggest upgrade in the Torin 9 is undoubtedly the new P35X dual-density midsole. Compared to the older EGO Max setup, this foam feels significantly more refined underfoot.
The design uses a firmer outer layer with a softer inner layer, creating a ride that feels cushioned without becoming unstable or mushy. There’s a noticeable sense of stability throughout transitions, and the shoe feels far more energetic than some previous Torin versions that eventually became flat or lifeless over time.
I’m especially hopeful this new setup holds its character better over higher mileage. That was my biggest issue with my Torin 7: it started great but lost some responsiveness after a couple hundred miles. My early impressions suggest the P35X midsole may have solved that problem.
The slightly lower stack height also plays a major role in the ride quality. Dropping from 30/30 mm to 28/28 mm is only a slight change, but one that gives the shoe a more connected feel to the ground. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the feeling I loved in the Escalante 2.5: smooth, natural, and comfortable without excess bulk underneath you.
The Torin 9 doesn’t try to overwhelm you with softness or bounce. Instead, it delivers a very balanced ride that quietly disappears beneath your stride, which is exactly what I want from a high-mileage daily trainer.

THE NITTY GRITTY
Joe: The Torin 9 is a daily trainer through and through, and honestly, that’s its greatest strength.
It’s not plated. It’s not aggressively rockered. It’s not trying to become the tallest or flashiest shoe on the wall. Instead, it focuses on delivering consistent comfort and natural movement every single day. Altra’s “Uncommon Comfort” tagline honestly fits this shoe perfectly because the Torin 9 simply makes running feel easy and enjoyable.
This is the type of shoe that handles recovery runs effortlessly but can also pick up the pace for moderate workouts when needed. More importantly, it’s the kind of shoe you end up wearing outside of running too. I’ve genuinely enjoyed walking in it, wearing it to work, and if I’m being completely honest, I’m tempted to grab another pair just to use as a casual shoe around the house. And that’s coming from someone who normally prefers being barefoot whenever possible.
The Torin 9 also carves out its own identity nicely within Altra’s lineup. It feels distinct enough from the Experience Flow 3 that both could comfortably coexist in a low- or zero-drop rotation.

THE RUNDOWN
Joe: As the famous tune goes: “Buh-duh-dun-dun-dun... I’m loving it!”
Altra calls the Torin 9 “Unique AF,” and honestly, they may be underselling just how comfortable this shoe is. The updated P35X dual-density midsole feels like the missing ingredient the Torin line has needed for a while now. It delivers cushioning, stability, and comfort in a way that feels much more sustainable over long-term mileage.
What stands out most is how approachable the shoe feels. It’s not flashy. It’s not trying to dominate the super-trainer conversation. It simply delivers reliable, natural-feeling comfort every time you lace it up.
Altra describes the Torin as the “unicorn” for runners seeking a natural fit and plush ride in a familiar package, and after spending time in the Torin 9, it’s hard to argue with that description.
Lately, I’ve had several people ask me what my favorite running brand or shoe is, and my usual response has always been, “They’re like my kids, I can’t pick a favorite.” But with the updates made to the Torin 9, I can honestly say Altra is making that answer a little more difficult these days.
The Torin 9 may not be the fastest or most technologically aggressive shoe out there, but it’s become one of the easiest shoes to trust. Whether I’m heading out to explore town, cruising through recovery miles, or running repetitive neighborhood loops, I know I’m going to enjoy the run once this shoe is on my feet.
