ON THE RUN

Sidney: With the Experience Flow 3, Altra didn’t reinvent the wheel, they just amped up the goodness. The first time I hit pavement in these, I felt right at home as I spent quite a lot of time in my Experience Flow 2s.

What stood out right away was the updated mesh upper. It feels lighter and more breathable without losing structure, which makes the shoe disappear on the foot during easy and steady miles. The heel collar update is subtle but noticeable. It’s softer, more padded, and sits comfortably without rubbing or needing any break-in time. Overall, the Flow 3 still brings the same smooth, easygoing ride that made me enjoy the previous version, just with a little more comfort built in.

THE FIT

Sidney: Fit remains one of the strongest parts of the Experience Flow line. The Standard FootShape toe box gives plenty of room up front without feeling sloppy, and the midfoot holds securely without squeezing. It’s a shape that works for a wide range of feet and makes all runs feel more relaxed.

The heel is where the Flow 3 improves most. The updated collar adds comfort and security, especially for runners who noticed firmness in earlier versions. It feels stable without being stiff, and I never felt like I needed to adjust or retie mid-run.

THE FEEL

Sidney: Underfoot, the Flow 3 feels balanced and predictable in a good way. Cushioning is comfortable without being overly soft, and the low-drop platform keeps everything feeling natural and grounded. The rocker geometry helps transitions stay smooth, especially at easier paces.

This is the kind of shoe that lets you settle into a rhythm and stay there. It doesn’t push you to run faster, but it also never feels dull. Whether it’s short daily miles, longer steady runs, or walking around afterward, the Flow 3 stays comfortable from start to finish.

THE NITTY GRITTY

Sidney: Here’s the thing: the Flow 3 isn’t a radical overhaul, and that’s totally the point. It’s refinement, not reinvention. The updates, engineered mesh, heel collar, and overall comfort, make this feel like the sweetest, most user-friendly version yet.

If you’re coming from Flow 2 or original Flow? This is very much in that same family but softer where it counts and smoother where it matters.

THE RUNDOWN

Sidney: The Experience Flow 3 is one of those shoes that surprises you with how easy it is to make it your daily go-to. Not every update has to be flashy or ground-breaking; sometimes, the best upgrades are the ones you feel in comfort and forget in the best way.

These are versatile, breezy, friendly on the feet, and most importantly they make runs and walks feel simply good. Roomy enough to let your toes live their best life, cushioned where you want it, and still sleek enough for everyday wear.

Meet the Reviewers

Sidney Jonckheere

Sidney Jonckheere

Sidney spent most of her life hating running, until a doctor told her she couldn’t do it. That flipped a switch, and now she’s training for everything from 5Ks to 100 milers. She’s the first to say yes to crewing your next race, and if you tell her you’re up for “whatever” distance… get ready for a long run.
